Gail P. Wilcox - Mental Health and Substance Abuse Counseling

Is life difficult for you?

Do you experience thoughts like:

"I always make a mess of everything."?

Almost everyone has times when they feel really sad and experience dark thoughts. We also encounter situations where we experience stress and anxiety and can feel symptoms like our heart pounding. With depression and anxiety, though, the negative thoughts seem to take over. They seem to be constant. They can also take over and distort your view of reality. It becomes difficult to even get out of bed or catch your breath.

Cognitive therapy can be an effective way to defuse those thoughts. When used for depression, anxiety, or addiction, cognitive therapy provides a mental tool kit that can be used to challenge negative thoughts. Over the long term, cognitive therapy can change the way a person sees the world.

Most people are able to apply the tools learned in therapy and acheive a healthy emotional life. Some people need medication to treat depression or anxiety. Studies have shown that cognitive therapy works at least as well as medication in helping people with mild to moderate depression or anxiety. Individuals on medications for depression and anxiety typically find therapy is essential for long term mental wellness. Some people will need to combine treatment with medication to fully achieve a healthy emotional life.

Whether you come to see me for depression, anxiety, post traumatic stress, grief, or addiction, my goal is for you to learn a new tool or experience a new insight each session. I believe that anyone can benefit from counseling and life coaching. Many of my clients are successful individuals and couples who know, as I do, that everyone has the potential to grow.
